Diaconal Ministry: History, Formation, and Spirituality

Servant leadership, Word and Service, and diaconal ministry are all synonyms for the ancient Greek word, diakonia, the call of Christ to serve others for the sake of the gospel. We invite you to accompany others interested in learning more through our January elective course.

Formation Event:
  • For those J-term participants interested in what formation with the Deaconess Community of the ELCA and ELCIC might look like, the sisters host a formation event the day prior to J-Term.

The Course:

  • Introduces the historical, theological and social contexts of diaconal (Word and Service) ministry throughout history.
  • Provides opportunity for discussion on vocation and diaconal calling.
  • Affirms and encourages recognition of the importance and knowledge of the Lutheran Confessions as theologically and spiritually foundational writings.
  • Awards three hours of academic credit.

Course Goals:

  • To present a theological grounding for discernment.
  • To learn about the ministry of Word and Service throughout the Church’s history.
  • To experience and talk about intentional community.

There may be the opportunity to take this course as an Independent Study undergraduate course in partnership with your college/university.

Tuition:
The course is offered through Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. Tuition for all participants is paid by the Deaconess Community of the ELCA. The January 2021 course will be virtual.

The cost of books is the responsibility of each student.

Deaconess Community representatives are in residence as resource staff during the on-site component of the course.
