Do not worry about tomorrow: April Diaconal Prayer Letter

Do not worry about tomorrow: April Diaconal Prayer Letter

by Deacon Gordon Pennykid, Church of Scotland and secretary of DIAKONIA Region Africa Europe (DRAE)

One of the things I deal with everyday in my Job (Prison Chaplain) is the fear of the unknown.

Remand Prisoners who have no idea what will be the outcome of their case or how long they will be in prison. Long term prisoners who fear the long years and what the world will be like when they are free. Prison officers who never know where the next issue will come from. Prison chaplains who never know what to say…!

Jesus said “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34).

Well today in the world we seem to be facing so many unknowns. At this time of uncertainty for the EU/Britain-we can be fearful or have faith. And as I sit and write this the only known seems to be the unknown!

As we in The Church of Scotland prepare for the DRAE conference, with the theme “for such a time as this”, we are praying for peace, unity and stability. And by the time June comes maybe we willknow what the future holds, maybe we won’t, what we do know is that as DIAKONIA we will be building bridges and offering hope to our members and those whom we serve. We will be celebrating our past and looking forward to our future whatever the outcome.

As we reflect on the future we think of the past, we remember the highs and lows, the joys and sorrows, those who are close to us and those we’re missing. We thank you for your faithful love, now and in the past.

As we pray for the future, may those in prison, and their families, come to know You and know Your love. May your love, peace and hope fill each one of us and those in prison, spilling out into the lives of those around us, As we become all that you’ve created us to be.

As we hope for the future we look at our past. May your forgiveness lead victims to a place of hope. We trust that you will seek them out and surround them in love.

As we look to the future of our political relationships may we learn from the past. Teach us to trust where none seems possible.

Help us to see a future of hope, love and unity.

We bring our our prayers in Jesus’ name – Amen.
