Prophetic diakonia: what is it?

Prophetic diakonia: what is it?

Diakonia means service. All Christians receive this call at baptism. Deacons and Deaconesses are called by the church to educate, equip, and lead other Christians in that service.

Prophetic Diakonia means serving in the messy, beautiful space where the church and the world intersect.

Directing Deaconess Sr. Noreen Stevens, points to the definition from the Lutheran World Federation: “Diakonia begins as unconditional service to the neighbor in need, [and] it leads inevitably to social change.”

Director of Vocation and Education Sr. Liz Colver adds, “In Diakonia, we are all called to join our power, voice, presence, relationship, to with those who are oppressed and voiceless.”
